Take a minute to look through this awesome collection of photos from the 1961 freedom rides, which made a statement about civil rights throughout the segregated south.
The Freedom Riders were mostly college students, blacks and whites, who set out on Greyhound and Trailways buses across the South to test a U.S. Supreme Court decision banning segregation in interstate transportation.
Above, Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy and one of the rides’ organizers John Lewis announce they play to continue the rides despite resistance in Montgomery, Ala. It’s worth mentioning that John Lewis is now the congressman for Atlanta, Ga. (my rep).
